ELZBIETA KRAWECKA
AOCA, SCA, FCA
Raised in Poland and the Middle East, Elzbieta is a long -time Toronto-based artist whose work has been exhibited and recognized nationally.
Her exposure to different cultures sparked a love of travel, and moving to Canada to study at the Ontario College of Art and Design deepened her appreciation for the Canadian landscape
— an influence clearly reflected in her oil paintings
"Within these paintings, movement and space pose a question which pertains to entering a work where place and time are undefined. What is required is something personal; a thought, a colour, an ephemeral quality of sunlight... a timeless sky as a universal space of collective memory."

Using heavily layered paint alongside translucent glazes, Elzbieta experiments with layering techniques to create depth and texture. Inspired by travels to remote places her work, she continues to push the boundaries of landscape painting while developing her own contemporaneity.
As a natural response to the vastness of the North American continent, coupled with the emptiness of the Kuwaiti desert, her paintings capture expansive skies and open waters suspended in moments of quiet transformation, inner turbulence and quiet resilience, where emotion becomes atmosphere, and the viewer stands as the only fixed presence within a vast, unbounded space.

IN THE STUDIO
Working in her west-end Toronto studio, Elzbieta uses richly layered paint and translucent glazes developed through ongoing experimentation and inspiration drawn from immersion in nature, to push the boundaries of contemporary landscape painting.
Drawing from emotion, memory, observation, and the landscapes that have shaped her life, she creates immersive works in which atmosphere, movement, and inner states of being unfold.

INSPIRATION
Travelling to unfamiliar, remote, and solitary places has been a continuing source of inspiration for Elzbieta. While travel to distant regions remains a passion, in recent years her practice has increasingly focused on Canada. From her home in Ontario, she has explored remote areas of British Columbia, Yukon, Quebec, the Canadian Arctic, and the East Coast, with Newfoundland among her favourites.
